Flavored Coffee Syrup

A sweet and flavorful addition to coffee

Coffee syrups are used to add a variety of flavors to coffee. Syrups are especially good for those who want to have a little flavor now and then but don’t want to buy flavored coffee.

Coffee syrups are generally made from corn, sugar cane and fruits. Most are sweet but the fruit and sugar cane syrups are generally sweeter than those made from corn syrup.

Varieties of Flavored Syrup

Flavored syrup comes in many varieties. One variety, Routin, is made in the French Alps. Routin syrup is pasteurized and claims to be all-natural and contain no preservatives. Routin is known to have a high fruit content and low sugar content. For those who worry about calories in flavored syrup, Routin is the recommended flavored syrup.

Most of the other flavored syrups on the market are the gourmet variety. Many companies produce flavored syrup. These companies include Monin and Stirling. One specialist company called Da Vinci produces forty-eight flavors. Da Vinci has a wide range of flavors, including

toasted marshmallow,
pumpkin pie,
pina colada, and
toffee.

More exotic flavors exist, but the most popular flavored syrups are the traditional flavors like

hazelnut
Irish crème, and
French vanilla.

Many people would much rather add traditional syrup flavors to their coffee than buy cffee that has been flavored on the bean.

Flavored Syrup: A Weighty Issue

One of the drawbacks to flavored syrup is the calorie count. Flavored syrup is fattening. Considering that black coffee has only about 4 calories per cup, adding syrup does add to the waistline. Companies have risen to this challenge. The aforementioned Routin variety is low-cal. Many other types of flavored syrup are all natural with no artificial flavors or preservatives. For the weight-conscious, fat free, cholesterol free, and sugar free flavored syrups are also out there. More coffee chains are also taking notice of the demand for low-cal syrups. Starbucks, for example, offers both regular and sugar-free syrups to its customers.
